Who we are.
The Melchers of Mendon are a family of six with two boys and two girls. We live on a few acres in Mendon, which is a bit southeast of Rochester, NY. The kids are all in school. Mom is a pedodontist and Dad is a stay at home Dad...former science teacher. We 'found' this wonderful land just seven years ago. The Taylor's were selling their parent's estate. The three Taylor children, all working artists , had promised their parents that they would only sell the land to folks who would be interested in preserving the land with its diversity and character. The Taylor patriarch, Joe, had been a world class birder. He was the 'Indiana Jones of the Birding World' giving a much need boost to the American Birding Association while the organization was in its infancy.
We had been looking for land to create a sanctuary of our kids and other wildlife as well as build our passive solar home. We contacted Gay Mills of the Genesee Land Trust who told us about the Taylor property. Love at first sight (site). We fell in love with both the land and the Taylors...as people, artists as well as their vision.
The need to find sanctuary is never ending. Domestic and farm animals
